A Valley Center couple, who chased off a burglar they found showering in their home, said they’re staying put in their house but will install surveillance cameras as a precaution.
Just after 11:35 a.m. Friday, 47-year-old Jerald Wayne Harris went into the couples’ house on Valley Center Road, near Lake Wohlford Road, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO).
Allen and Joyce Penwright, both in their 70s, said they were not home when Harris slipped inside–Allen was in the garage and Joyce was at the dog park.
When his wife returned home, she heard the water running. She went into the bathroom and found Harris in the shower.
“He was naked when he pulled the door back,” Joyce said, speaking of Harris.
Joyce said she ran out to find Allen. But by the time they returned, the suspect was dressed and sprinting for the front door.
“I said you’re lucky I don’t have a gun or I would blow you’re [expletive] off,” said Allen.
The couple told NBC 7, there was a willingness to forgive and forget until Joyce discovered that her watch was missing.
That’s when she went outside and followed Harris northbound on Valley Center Road until law enforcement arrived and arrested him.
Deputies searched Harris and found the victim’s watch inside his pocket.
Harris was already on parole for burglary and was formerly a sexual assault registrant, according to SDSO. He is now facing new charges of indecent exposure, burglary and parole violations.
